Zen days & Party nights
Canggu (pronounded Changoo) is a bit grit, a bit zen, and unexpectedly hip. My first introduction to Bali, my mind was spinning, the scooters were zipping and the waves were ripping. To overcome jet lag and find some zen, I hid out in this posh paradise for my first four days, with little drive to leave. As brekkie, in house massages, pool parties and dinner deliveries were readily available, Villa Pheonix was where it was at. I meditated in the zen garden every morning, read, drank Bintangs, swam in the villa's gorgeous pool and made some amazing new friends in the process.
I did manage to escape the villa long enough to surf Old Man's, a killer spot with firing lefts and rights on either side of a massive rip, took some mind blowing yoga classes at Desa Seni, the most gorgeous yoga utopia I have ever seen, and Samadi (stay for lunch or go Sundays to catch the market) and found my way to Deus, the infamous surf and moto mecca for late night shenanigans.
If you want to avoid the craze, skip Kuta and Seminyak altogether and just head to Canggu. It's the real deal.
New friends are easy to come by in Bali:).
This is Echo Beach. This guy got lucky surfing here at Old Man's & so did I. The waves can get pretty big, pretty fast here. Let's just say I got caught in a rip, the waves got massive and I got a bit of a scare. Lesson learned: never surf alone in unfamiliar territory and if you get in a bind, make a friend quick, and take the next wave in on your belly if its the most you can manage. lol.
Desa Seni - aka yoga paradise!!! Next time, I will stay here in one of these adorable huts and meditate and eat and do yoga and drink ginger tea:).
Samadi Yoga & Sunday Market
These Balinese croissant-like pastries were filled with chocolate. So good.
& I have to mention Nalu Bowls of goodness. Yum.
While Deus ex Machina is known for making sick motorcycles, Canggu's Temple of Enthusiasm delivers that and a whole lot more. From caffeine and gasoline to tacos and free tattoo Tuesdays, the Temple turns day into night.
